Greatest Japanese Game ever played, Jump scare is so nice that made me jump of my chair. I give it a 5 star. Thanks for the game
Ikai - Demo
A downloadable game for Windows
Fear and anxiety prevail after the darkest tales from Japanese folklore come to life in this first-person psychological horror game. Live the horror from the feudal era's beliefs as the priestess of a temple.
This demo is meant to test the key features of the final game. It is currently on Alpha so we'll develop it further in Ikai. Don't forget to add it on your Steam wishlist if you enjoy it.

The blood-stained leaves were the first evidence of chaos. The temple's bell screams for help, but it is no longer a sacred place. All Gods have gone, giving way to monsters, ghosts and spirits. You, the perfect priestess, had the onus to protect it, yet did quite the opposite.
Don’t faint now, embrace your weaknesses and pray for surviving in the mayhem you’ve just unleashed. Keep a stiff upper lip, nothing bad will happen if you follow these two rules.
- Write the protective seals on time with brush and ink
- Be silent, under no circumstances should you disturb the evil
Dare you help get back the Gods and redeem your actions? Experience the terror by the hand of yokais and submerge into the superstitions of the past driven by a unique story and exploration.

Noise and silence... they go so well together. The demo for Ikai is genuinely scary. At times, you’ll be thankful you don’t hear anything. But moments later, the silence begins to deafen. You almost WANT to hear something in hopes your feeling of isolation leaves your soul. That is, until you actually hear something...
That’s the back-and-forth I felt while playing the demo. It looks great, and the audio compliments the visuals to create a chilling atmosphere. But by far, my greatest fear came true when I discovered that I wasn’t...
Well, just try this already. You won’t regret it.
Thank you so much for your kind words :)
We believe that sounds and silence together can be scary without the need of a background music to tell you how you should feel. That's something we want to keep for the full game and hopefully, accomplish the same effect as with the demo.
This game was great!
One thing that really gets me is effective sound use! And the sound design and the way it's used in this game is awesome! I can't wait for the full release!
Keep up the great work!
Here's my playthrough for anyone interested (time stamps in the description):
Thanks for playing! Glad you liked the sound design, we put a lot of effort in it! Although it still needs some little tweaks :)
I found IKAI an interesting genre of a horror survival game I would also like to point out the dialogue was simple yet effective. I did not really know what to expect with all the sudden jump scares in all the rooms and the sound effects kept me guessing where another ghost might appear. lol, I’m keen to see the final version of this game upon its release in 2021 and I think this game gives the horror genre a fresh outlook into survival horror games on Japanese legends and folklore.
We wanted to have some sort of dialogue to guide the player through the story but without being too intrusive, glad you liked it. And thanks for playing :D
Very well made game! The ambiance and noises really made you feel like someone was always next to you! Well definitely check out the full game on release!
I finished it, well worth the effort! The video at the end was also really pretty 😁
Damn, this game has buckets of atmosphere. Very creepy and helps sell the whole "alone in a temple" vibe.
However, I do think that the ambient sound effects may have been a bit too intrusive in that they seemed to play so frequently as to become distracting. One sound effect in particular sounds very much like a door being slid open/closed. While that set me on edge initially because I thought "Crap! There's something nearby that can open doors!", eventually it just became irritating as it was then a sound effect with no source or cause for concern. It lessened the impact of the audioscape for me by the end.
Still, overall, the game was good enough to make me stealth mode 95% of the run, so that's gotta count for something! 😁
Thank you for your feedback! You're right, we need to adjust the frequency of some sounds. That's something we will keep in mind for the full game :)
Would I go back? Yes. I'm definitely keeping my eye on this one!
Thank you! If you don't mind, we're curious about why the gameplay is in black and white. Did you edited the video or you played like this? Did you had any problems with the game because of that?
Oh no, that's just a thematic element I use for this particular channel. I'm glad to have had a friend with me, because it scared me out of my wits. I've played a lot of these games and I've got to say this one felt really unique.
I like this game format a lot. Instead of just throwing a monster at the player, it becomes an educational experience. There's a game called Pamali with a similar approach that teaches you about the lore behind the monster, as well, and it kind of walks you through another culture's mythology, and explains how the monster became a restless spirit. It creates sympathy and changes the dynamic from "I have to kill this thing" to "I need to help them find peace." Great start, looking forward to more!
Glad you liked it :D
Pamali has been a reference to us of how it explains Indonesian folklore through a horror game. We wanted to do something similar but with Japanese folklore
Love love loved this demo experience! So many creepy moments, and honestly, I loved the sound design within this game. Well done and can’t wait for the full game!
Loved the setting Japanese Horror has always been really good in my book!
Great game!! Some constructive criticism: The jumpscares are too long, if there's a way to make them shorter, then great! Loved the atmosphere and all the background noise! Can't wait for more monsters.
Thanks for the feedback! We received several complains about the jumpscares being too long, we will make them shorter for the full game ;)
Enjoyed game a lot and will be waiting till full release
I loved it, the story was another level, it left me wanting more and I look forward to the full game .. just excellent :) (the gameplay is in spanish jaja)
Absolutely loved this game! Can't wait to see what the full game offers (;
Absolutely beautiful!!! The atmosphere was sooooo good, that I properly spooked!! I'm gonna have to give it another go so I don't succumb to the spirit.
Give it another go, don't let the spirit wander around the shrine. You need to purify it! :D
I loved the look and the sound effects were awesome! I'm definitely going to have another go and try to do better 😁💪
Thank you very much! Hope you give it another go and finish it.
Let us know what you think when you do it ;)
Awesome demo! Great environment that had me paranoid and creeped out before I even saw anything.
(Start 11:49) This was one of the scariest games i've ever played!
phantastic atmosphere! Cool game. I enjoyed this let‘s play and am looking forward to play the full version myself!
the mask was the most terrifying part, and i cant wait for more
Really enjoyed the game, loved the Japanese themed/scenery, gives it that extra spookinest to it. Feel free to check out my gameplay of the game
Super creepy demo! Great voice acting. Great visuals. Loved the monster.
things i really liked about this game demo :D
>great audio design
>spooky evil spirits
things i didn't like
>demo was short and know i need the rest of the story
Hahahah, thank you for the feedback :)
We'll try to keep the things you liked for the full game. For the full story you'll have to wait for the full game, sorry...
It was a really nice experience playing the demo. I really liked the atmosphere and the location. I really like that seal idea, I hope you expand on it more! Keep it up and good luck with releasing the full version!
I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this game. The audio design was the strongest in my opinion. Although Kijo was a very spooky monster I tend to not like when it stays in your face for too long as it ruins the mystery of it. Altogether was a very nice game!
We'll reduce the duration of the killing animation, we received similar comments saying it's too long. Thank you so much for the feedback :D
I am really looking forward to this game.
I really like the graphics and sounds, they match well together.
I also love stealth games, where you have to hide from enemies/monsters. This game has a lot of potential and I'm sure it'll be well used!
Though there were some problems with when you died, your mouse sensitivity is acting weird. Sometimes its very high and sometimes very slow but I reckon that will be fixed in the future anyway :)
Thank you for this Demo!
8/10 because of the potential!
I love this game!
So scared xD
Pros and cons are down below) Check out my vid here:
1. I absolutely love that the game is based on existing legends - that is very cool. The game is entertaining, involving, scary and informative)
2. The spirit is scary - it's a very original mechanics of progressing the story and I love them. It takes several tries to understand the concept though (but that is a normal process of learning mechanics).
3. I loved the collectibles. They were not so hard to find and interesting to read about (though I rarely read additional collectible information)
1. I found a bug when the main character speaks that there is something behind the curtains when you haven't met the spirit yet (I played the game before some updates), maybe that is already fixed.
2. It's not clear under what conditions the ghost kills you. Maybe some hints in the pause menu would be a nice addition - that way they won't be burdening for those who like to figure everything out on their own but helpful for the others.
3. I didn't really liked the voice acting. I though it was a bit emotionless and bland - but that is my persona preference. I still think it's better than the lack of voice acting.
I adored the concept and the demo! Can't wait for the full game. 5/5 in my list!
Hope my feedback was useful!
Thanks for the extended feedback, we very much appreciate it :)
For the advantages, nothing to comment (except thank you). For the disadvantages:
1. Already fixed in the v0.1.0.2 (thanks for pointing it out)
2. Good suggestion, we will take that into account for the full game. We'll try to explain a little bit more the lose conditions when you are drawing the seal.
3. We had to do the voice acting ourselves, for budget reasons. For the full game we will try to hire a professional.
Thanks again for your feedback, glad you liked the game :D
I love this game! I got stuck for a long time but I plan on finishing this game in the future
Thanks! Hope you finish the game some day :)
This game is honestly one of the best games i played on this site. I hope you enjoy the video!!!!
Madly exciting demo! Can't wait for the full release.
Exciting demo in terms of horror and the beginning to something like a compelling narrative. love the shitty handwriting no jutsu, it's a really natural feeling way of building tension by forcing you to be static and managing light could add another element (not sure light actually figures in so far).
Here's my video if you're interested, critique at 26:30:
Nice critique, very helpful. We'll take that into account for the full game. Thanks for playing!
pretty nice game but weird ending to be honest lol got scared at least one time tho
check out my gameplay + commentary here:
The ambiance in this game is outstanding. Love the attention to the subtle details, especially background sounds. Really had me on edge.
