Ikai - Demo
A downloadable game for Windows
Fear and anxiety prevail after the darkest tales from Japanese folklore come to life in this first-person psychological horror game. Set in a feudal era, Ikai revolves around the priestess of a shrine struggling to defeat the spirits of her past and her present.
This demo is meant to show you a sneak peek of the final game. Full game will come out January 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

Ikai embodies the spirit of the classical psychological horror genre with a defenceless main character incapable of attacking the evil creatures. However, it explores a new sense of horror by making the player face the threats directly neither fleeing nor attacking.
Every mechanic of the game is meant to raise this relatable feeling of helplessness and create a tense atmosphere. The slow, precise and natural movements as a way of interaction resemble real life’s to foster immersion in the uncanny world of Ikai.
- FEAR: Experience the horror in first-person by the hand of Japanese spirits, monsters and yokais
- EXPLORATION: Wander around a feudal shinto shrine and explore to unveil the story behind Naoko, the main character
- DRAWING: Concentrate on drawing protective seals over the strange sounds and events happening around
- PUZZLES: Pit your wits against the several puzzles that will try to stop you
- STEALTH & RUN: Be silent, do not disturb the evil… Or just run, run away from it all, if you can…

I think the new voice actress does an incredible job and had a great performance, but I believe the old VA was more fitting for this game despite the worse performance. I definitely have lots of conflicting views with this new demo, but I am excited to see the finished product next week.

It felt strange sitting at the table writing the ward, it was as if at any moment, the monster that I saw skulking about would attack me.
I really can’t wait for the full game, the trailer at the end of the demo looks like there are so many cool moments still to come.

I really want to like this, as I am interested in Japanese folklore and love the Fatal Frame series. However, I just have way too many issues.
I could never get a respectable framerate without dropping the settings to the very lowest, which of course kills the atmosphere. My computer is a couple years old, but I have run better looking stuff at 60FPS with no problem, so I don't know if it's an engine issue or if the game is poorly optimized.
The pacing is not very good. After 15 minutes of trying to figure out what to do, I had to watch a video to figure out where to find the coin, and then it took another ten minutes of wandering and opening random doors to find the library, and THEN another few minutes to find the brush. And of course, as I grab the brush, she says "Maybe it's on a higher shelf." Yes, it was.
And finally, I have to search for another random objective in the mansion while now there is a random ghost that is hard to avoid and seems to sense me from no matter where.
I like the concept a lot, so I'm going to keep an eye on this project, but right now I can't see myself playing it in the current state.

About the coin, once you go upstairs and dont find it, if you try to go again downstairs she said where is the coin.
I dont know maybe it was a bug or you didn't notice.
This was definitely spooky, I loved it!

Hey! Drawing with a pen tab doesn't work quite well with the version of the demo. We already fixed this problem, and won't be an issue for the final game ;)

Hey HoneyHaunting! The full game will be released along 2021, there is still plenty of time until release. Also, the full game will be different from the demo.

My god, my wallet is so READY to buy this game when it comes out. The atmosphere is AMAZINGLY creepy. The sfx is on point!! It gives me the chills and that's what I want from a horror game! The story and concept are so interesting and I can't wait for the full release. I'm glad I streamed this to save my favorite moments! Thank you for making such an amazing demo!!

I just finished the demo and as others have pointed out, is just about perfect. A couple of things I'd like to see with the game are;
• Having a native Japanese voice actor (not the high pitch ones)
and/or
• Having a native Japanese voice actor speaking English
I'm sure the current voice is only temporary, but it really does detract from some of the immersion.
Secondly, some of the language used in the voice over and letters aren't very period correct. Such as "...and I've messed it up" just doesn't feel right.
But apart from those, a very well done!

For the voice over we are planning to hire a professional voice actor (in native Japanese). The voice of the demo was done by ourselves as the budget didn't allow to hire a professional yet.
As for the language used, we will review it for the final game and we will make changes to be accurate with the history period. Very well found, we didn't thought on that, thanks! :D

I played through the demo and actually uploaded my gameplay to my channel. Before I say anything about the game, I would love to see a plushie of the Yokai clutching a little bell. That would be an instant sell for me. I actually had a great time with this demo. The atmosphere and sound design were phenomenal. You had me trembling and jumping at every little sound, I was a child. I will say that the voice acting could use a bit of improvement in clarity, but I didn't mind it overall. For what is available here, I am incredibly impressed, with it being from such a small team. I can not wait for more. Thank you for this! The Yokai swiping at the bell was actually quite adorable, by the way.

Played your game demo at the weekend guys, video just released. My gosh, it was terrifying! I've not played many horrors granted, but your game audio scared the hell out of me! The graphics were great, but your sound engineer deserves an award! I was a little disappointed I didn't get the jumpscare, so much so I went back and played it again purposely provoking her into attacking me so I could add it into my video. Haha. Still scared me then! LOL. Well done guys. Genuinely the best horror I've played yet. Such an amazing experience, I will absolutely be checking out and covering your full game. I will be stocking up on pants first though! 😂
